The Princeton Math Department’s Graduate Students’ Guide to Generals is pretty interesting. They don’t exactly give them an easy time, and the list of examiners is pretty scary (Conway, Wiles and Fefferman in one case!)

Yeah, but they hardly ever fail anyone. They just make some of them suffer.
I don’t know if those names are the scariest on the list, though. I can’t remember who the really tough questioners were.
Of course, I got to watch all of this from afar. We had our own hazing rituals.
