{"id":558,"date":"2009-02-11T21:45:14","date_gmt":"2009-02-12T01:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelnielsen.org\/blog\/?p=558"},"modified":"2009-02-11T21:45:14","modified_gmt":"2009-02-12T01:45:14","slug":"writing-to-be-taken-out-of-context","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelnielsen.org\/blog\/writing-to-be-taken-out-of-context\/","title":{"rendered":"Writing to be taken out of context"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a world where it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s becoming easier and easier to reshare information in other forums, where it can be a sign of authorial <em>success<\/em> to have your words reshared and then reshared again, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve noticed that the way I think about what I write is gradually changing.<\/p>\n<p>Increasingly, I write with an eye not only to the immediate way my words will be received, but also with an eye to how they might be read, in the event that they are taken and reshared in other places, perhaps stripped of the context from which they were taken.<\/p>\n<p>This effect has been strongest, by far, in my stream of <a href=\"http:\/\/delicious.com\/nielsen\">delicious<\/a> bookmarks.  These are automatically shared not just with people who follow my delicious bookmarks, but also on my <a href=\"http:\/\/friendfeed.com\/michaelnielsen\">friendfeed<\/a>, and on my blog.  <\/p>\n<p>Each of these forums has a slightly different tone and constraints.  I find myself sometimes thinking &#8220;oh, that description won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t quite work on friendfeed&#8221;, when I know that it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just fine on delicious and on my blog.  And I sometimes pause to think about how things might read, when taken and put in a context over which I have no control.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is new, of course \u00e2\u20ac\u201c people have always quoted both themselves and each other.
