{"id":838,"date":"2011-01-22T18:21:22","date_gmt":"2011-01-22T22:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelnielsen.org\/blog\/?p=838"},"modified":"2011-01-22T18:21:22","modified_gmt":"2011-01-22T22:21:22","slug":"awesome-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelnielsen.org\/blog\/awesome-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Awesome grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beginning this month, every month the <a href=\"http:\/\/awesometo.wordpress.com\">Toronto Awesome Foundation<\/a> will give away $1,000 for someone to do something that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, well, awesome.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/awesometo.wordpress.com\/how-it-works\">how to apply<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no reporting, no strings, no oversight.  Just $1,000 to the winner to do whatever they think is worth doing.<\/p>\n<p>Deadline for submissions is February 15.<\/p>\n<p>Many questions are addressed in the links at the bottom of the <a href=\"http:\/\/awesometo.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/20\/1000-each-month-for-something-awesome\/\">announcement post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are other chapters of the <a href=\"http:\/\/awesomefoundation.org\/\">Awesome Foundation<\/a> around the world, and here are a few of the awesome things people have done: <a href=\"http:\/\/awesomefoundation.org\/blog\/2011\/01\/22\/ripleys-believe-it-boston-community-gardening\/\">grown food to help keep their local food pantry stocked<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/awesomefoundation.org\/blog\/2010\/12\/14\/the-december-dc-awesome-grant-is-fab-ulous\/\">helped get a Fab Lab started in Washington DC<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/awesomefoundation.org\/blog\/2010\/11\/09\/invisible-instruments-rok\/\">made invisible musical instruments<\/a>.  There are <a href=\"http:\/\/awesomefoundation.org\/blog\">many more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to happen every month, and you can keep track of announcements at the <a href=\"http:\/\/awesometo.wordpress.com\">Toronto Awesome blog<\/a>.  I won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t post updates on my blog every month, but I will on <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/michael_nielsen\">twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The money comes from <a href=\"http:\/\/awesometo.wordpress.com\/trustees\">10 Trustees<\/a> (I&#8217;m one), who each put up $100 a month.  I think it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be fun, and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a good way of supporting people doing interesting things.  <\/p>\n<p>(Yes, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the projects funded that are supposed to be Awesome, not the trustees.
